I get livid whenever I see schools call themselves “Montessori” and they don’t have a single Montessori material in their classrooms! Tacking on the name Montessori just gives them a reason to charge a few extra bucks! Agh! It makes “real” Montessori schools look bad. I think all Montessorians can agree when I say, we EARN our certification. It doesn’t get handed to us, and to see random people using the name Montessori so freely, really gets underneath my skin. Sometimes I wish Montessori would of copyrighted the name.

Today I was browsing through google, and I found an ad for a “Montessori” (notice, I put it quotes!) daycare. Within it’s name were the words, “Imagiplay”. I’m sure whoever wrote that ad is a good person with a good heart, but clearly, they know nothing about Montessori. Within their ad, they wrote “We spend our days using our imagination and having fun!” That’s another Red Flag! I’m not against children using their imagination, but if I were to advertise a “Montessori” daycare, I wouldn’t choose those words to describe my program. Montessori is based on real things not imagination! I”m thinking I should start a Montessori Police Committee….anyone care to join!

So true ! In Pennsylvania, about 20 years ago, the State Dept. of Private Ed. would specify "Montessori" on the private school licenses of Montessori schools. Then, because they didn't recognize other methods, such as Piaget and Waldorf, they stopped. Hopefully, through blogs like yours, more parents will learn what to look for and why Montessori is so special.

I hear you. I think it is even worse to use the name and have the material but NOT follow the philosophy!!! It bothers me too, but we have to do as much as we can to educate people as much as we can so that they can differentiate real Montessori from fake Montesomethings.

It is nice to know that Montessori teachers are passionate and care about what they do!

I agree with you full heartedly. I am wondering how to end this madness. Preaching and proding aren't the way to go. Maria seems like she'd want us to lead by example but that fog of Progressive Montessori and Traditional Montessori is thick.
My children are attending a traditional Montessori and there is also a progressive montessori in town. The progressive one has been around for years so peoples persception of what Montessori really is is skewed. I am not Montessori trained, only read any and all I can get my hand on but have fallen in love with her ways. My hope is to get educated and then help my kids teacher open a Montessori/daycare, much like your wish. But our stumbling block is progressive vs traditional!

I totally understand your frustration, I think there should be Montessori police. Everyday I hear of "montessori" schools that are doing everything wrong!! Anyway's I just wanted to say thanks for your comments on my blog. The checker board is usually used in the 6-9 montessori class and is presented after the children have worked with the stamp game, dot exercise, and both the small and large bead frame. Since Montessori did not patent her name or use it as a brandname to promote education, it is almost pointless to be angry. I have learnt not to become upset on this subject of schools claiming to be Montessori but have no materials whatsover that is related to the teachings, let alone the philosophy of it.

A few weeks ago, I decided to approach some Montessori schools in my area and you know what, NONE of the centres save Modern Montessori International (London) Singapore based office, are run by qualified Montessori owners! Half the teaching staff are from pre-school background who decided that Montessori is the best teaching method but never have any Montessori training. It is the same in other parts of Asia I have lived in.

I can't be angry because I have not started my own school to prove them wrong ya? All my students passed their exams and become self instructed learners. So that is the wealth I have created. But in the real world, it is not about what you know, is who you know. So let's get to know them and show them the way to become educated in the Montessori way, as one of many ways of teaching children, and convince them to embrace her philosophy and practice as the preferred choice over other forms.

@Annie-You are absolutely right! What you said was well put. A lot of the reason behind my blog was to spread the word about Montessori. I have used the Montessori way with my daughter, and have seen nothing but amazing results. I want to share with the rest of the world my experiences, thoughts, and ideas. You brought up a very good point- instead of getting angry...I should use that energy more positively and try to educate those who are not knowledgeable about this amazing method.
