1. Does the classroom have Montessori Materials?

You’d be surprised! A lot of schools that claim to be “Montessori” have very few Montessori materials on the shelf, which defeats the whole purpose! Maria Montessori carefully designed her materials to resonate with the natural development of a child. It is crucial that your child’s classroom is filled with aesthetically pleasing and natural works.

2. Does the child have “free choice”?

One of the interesting things that separates Montessori with traditional classrooms is the idea of “free choice”. Free choice basically means the child has the freedom to choose whatever work he’d like to do on the shelf. (Ideally, it has to be a work the teacher has already presented to him!) In other words, the child directs his learning.

3. How involved is the teacher?

You might be surprised, but a true Montessori class has teachers that are low-key and keep interruptions with children to a minimum. The primary role of the directress is to observe. A lot of times, teachers become too involved with their students, and often, children become too dependent on their teacher. A Montessori Directress provides the student with opportunities to explore by creating an environment that is rich with learning experiences. A good teacher is one that steps back, and watches the magic unfold.
